The School of Extended Studies uses the strengths of the University to serve and empower lifelong learners by delivering programs that are flexible, responsive, and innovative.
Part of the Extended Studies' mission is to bring Portland State University to the community. As such, Extended Studies offers courses and programs oriented to a variety of student audiences.
Here is a listing of the primary student audiences we serve. Click on the links to learn more about the opportunities available for each group.
Business professionals: Courses for professionals make up a large portion of Extended Studies offerings—including programs in multimedia, human resources, Web development, education, and management.
Students seeking degree and college credit: The majority of Extended Studies course offerings are for credit, including PSU Summer Session courses, most distance and online learning opportunities, Independent Study courses, and several degree completion programs.
International students: Extended Studies offers a number of opportunities for students from other countries, including correspondence courses through Independent Study and open enrollment for PSU Summer Session.
Students seeking personal enrichment: Extended Studies offers courses specifically for people seeking an educational experience for personal enrichment through our Personal and Workforce Development Online Noncredit Courses. Find publications from our Continuing Education Press to stimulate your interest.
High school students: The Independent Study program offers self-paced high school courses through correspondence or online. Advanced juniors and seniors can also take self-paced college courses and earn both high school and college credit at the same time.
High school students can also take college courses on campus during Summer Session.
Homeschool students: The Independent Study program courses work well for homeschoolers, whether they are ready for high school or college-level work. The Continuing Education Press publishes comprehensive Homeschool handwriting curriculum.
Head start and early childhood providers: The Early Childhood Training Center and Continuing Education/Graduate School of Education offer classes, training, and consultation for people involved with Head Start and early childhood education.
Other Students: If you don't identify with any of the above audiences, there likely are be offerings at Extended Studies that are of interest to you. Follow this link for more information.
