Statement by Vice Provost Michael Burton

Welcome to Portland State University’s School of Extended Studies.

Michael BurtonPortland State has a proud history of reaching out to the community by offering quality academic programs to a diverse population—students, professionals, and people who want to extend their knowledge in a wide variety of subjects. From its beginning in 1946 as an extension program of Oregon’s higher education system, PSU has grown into a comprehensive teaching and research university and has become a leader in community-based education.

The School of Extended Studies (SES) continues this tradition of bringing the academy to the community. We work with all the schools and colleges of the University to deliver academic programs beyond the boundaries of our downtown campus.

Through classes held at community college campuses and community locations throughout Oregon, SES makes undergraduate and graduate degree programs available to off-campus students at times and locales that are convenient for them.

Extended Studies online programs allow students to access many programs and classes on a 24/7 basis in support of undergraduate and graduate online degrees in many of PSU’s academic programs.

Our Independent Study program is designed for high school students who seek advanced standing for college or who wish to improve their academic skills, offering courses where you can start anytime and study anywhere. College-level credit is also available through this program for those seeking self-paced educational opportunities.

The Extended Studies' Professional Development Center (PDC) is your partner for continuing business education. PDC programs are developed using the latest research tools and techniques that can be applied immediately to your work. These real-world courses enable working professionals to hone their skills as they face the many challenges in the business environment.

The Continuing Education program (CEED) affiliated with the Graduate School of Education is a department within the School of Extended Studies. CEED provides quality education that supports the professional growth of PreK-16 educators, trainers, and human service professionals.

I invite you to take full advantage of the learning opportunities and all of us at SES hope that you will let us know how we can best serve your needs.
